Birda Mackey Gaddy, 88, passed away on July 5, 2024 in Lancaster County. The daughter of the late Charlie H. Mackey Sr. and the late Birda Jones Mackey was born in Lancaster County, SC on November 2, 1935.
Ree as she was affectionally called accepted Christ as herpersonal Savior and was an active member of Warner’s Temple.
She was educated in the Lancaster County School district and was retired from the Council on Aging where she was a dedicated employee.
Ree enjoyed life, family and children. Her love for life was contagious, and she had an uncanny ability to lift the spirits of those around her. Ree’s motherly instincts lead her to co found the Southside Kidz Club where she gave the youth in the community a safe environment to learn and play. A vibrant and high-spirited lady whose presence brought joy and energy to everyone around her. She was soft hearted yet strong willed and spoke her mind with courage. Ree had a passion for reading and cooking in which she was excellent in doing both. However, hergreatest passion was being with family and friends. To know her was to love her and she was loved by many.
Birda Mackey Gaddy leaves to cherish her memories; her four sons, Phillip Mackey and Menzell Mackey (Marlene) both of Lancaster, SC, Mendell Mackey (Sharon) of Charlotte, NC, Ernest Mackey (Karen) of Fayetteville, NC, a daughter, Gloria Gordon of Boiling Springs, SC, a sister, Jane Hood of Lancaster, SC, twenty three grandchildren, forty-nine great grandchildren, seventeen great great grandchildren, special friends and caregivers, Naomi Moore, Lovie Hubbard, Donna Truesdale, Debra “Pee Wee” Marsh, Lori Belk, Julia Cloud, Susan
Knox, Agape Care and a host of many cousins, aunts, uncles andother relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Sr. and Birda Mackey, a brother, Charlie Mackey Jr., daughter-in-law, Anne Mackey, son-in-law, Joseph Gordon, sister-in-law, Ruth Mackey, brother-in-law, Chalmers Hood
