Carl Montgomery Obituary

Mr. Carl Caganey Montgomery, 81, of Lancaster, South Carolina, peacefully entered the arms of our Almighty God on Friday, November 14, 2025. He was born on January 14, 1944, in Lancaster, South Carolina, to the late Louise and Charles Montgomery. His unwavering faith shaped every part of his life, guiding him to live with kindness, humility, gratitude, and quiet strength.

A proud 1963 graduate of Barr Street High School, Carl—affectionately known as “Big C”—was a talented multi-sport athlete whose gifts shone brightly on both the football field and the basketball court. Yet his greatest achievements were not found in victory or competition, but in the way he chose to serve others and honor God. Having given his life to Christ at an early age, he was a devoted member of David Stand A.M.E. Zion Church, where he faithfully served on the Usher Board, Steward Board, and in the church choirs. Always willing to lend his hands, his strength, and his heart, Carl lived out his faith through service.

He carried this same spirit of dedication into his professional life. For forty-four years, Carl worked as a truck driver with Springs Industries, where his exceptional work ethic, stellar driving record, integrity, and warm, steady smile earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Known for his reliability and calm presence, he embodied what many lovingly described as a “gentle giant”—firm in his convictions, generous in spirit, and endlessly patient.

In his free time, Carl enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams—the North Carolina Tar Heels, Washington Commanders, and Los Angeles Lakers—and he often called friends to share laughs, debates, and celebrations through every season. He also had a creative side, finding joy in crafting jewelry, especially rings and bracelets made from spoons, knives, and forks. He loved gifting these handmade treasures to his close family and friends. Carl was also known for his sweet tooth and his knack for bargain shopping, always excited to discover a good deal.

Through all of life’s seasons, Carl remained steadfast in his faith, generous in spirit, and grounded in love. He will be remembered for his gentle heart, sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to God and family. Though deeply missed, his loved ones rejoice in knowing he has found eternal rest and peace in the presence of our Lord and Savior.

Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his sons, Carl Boyd (Cassundra), Kevin Montgomery (Yanik), and Patrick Montgomery, all of Lancaster, SC; and a stepson, Vernon Bailey of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his sister, Minister Veronica Montgomery Gaither of Lancaster, SC; six grandchildren: Dr. LaShonda T. Cureton of Baltimore, MD, Meagan Geddis (Al) of Charleston, SC, Christy Miller of Kershaw, SC, Madison Montgomery, Miles Boyd, and step-grandson Arron Truesdale Sr., all of Lancaster, SC; five great-grandchildren: Carliel, Chloe, Chance, and Chandler, all of Kershaw, SC, and step-great-grandson Arron Jr. of Lancaster, SC. He is further survived by his beloved aunt, Juanita Montgomery of Lancaster, SC; along with a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his loving wife, Annie Sue Montgomery; his daughter, Carla Montgomery; his son, Allen Montgomery; two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Nehemiah; his parents, Louise and Charles Montgomery; and his sister, MaryLouise Montgomery.
