“I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.” Psalms 84:10
Charles Lee Brace age 72 passed away on September 1, 2024 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminister in
Charlotte. He lost a hard-fought, courageous, non-complaining battle and is now in the presence of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. Charles was born August 29, 1952 in Lancaster County, the eldest child of the late Roland Lee and Gladys
Wright Brace. He was educated in the Lancaster County School System and was a 1971 graduate of Andrew Jackson
High School. He was a dedicated employee with Bowater, now New Indy where he retired after 42 years of service.
Charles enjoyed attending church worship and church events, quartet music, yard work, the Dallas Cowboys, the N.C.
State Wolfpacks, fishing, golf, walking and going to the gym. He had a special fondness for a clean shiny car (which he
had many) and an immaculate lawn.
Charles began his religious journey at Cedar Rock Baptist Church in Liberty Hill where he accepted Christ and was
baptized. After marrying and moving to Lancaster, he joined First Washington Baptist Church where he was a faithful
and dedicated member who proudly served as an usher. He often talked about how the late Mrs. Giola Thompson
taught, supported and encouraged him to be the best usher that he could be. Welcoming people into the house of the
Lord was a position that Charles took seriously with honor, grace and integrity. Charles was also a member of the
Brotherhood and Men’s Sunday School Class.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Betty Blackmon Brace; a brother, Ray Brace (Lorene); three sisters, Essie B.
Gaither (Albert); Delois B. Anthony; Elnora B. Gaither (Bryan); mother-in-law, Mary M. Blackmon, two aunts, Viola
Anthony, Rosa Dunn (Bobby),brother-in-law, Obie Blackmon, Jr. (Beverly), sister-in-law, Linda B. Little, several
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Diane Brace and brother, Jerry Lewis
Brace.
“Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still
missed and very dear.”
