Charles Lewis Perry Sr.
Charles Lewis Perry Sr., age 85, departed this life peacefully on May 24, 2025, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Born on November 27, 1939, in Gastonia, North Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Cornelia Perry and the late Charles L. Bryson.
A devoted man of faith and service, Charles was a proud and faithful member of Abyssinian Baptist Church for over 50 years. During his tenure, he served in many leadership roles including Trustee, Deacon, and a key member of the church credit union. His dedication to both his faith and community was unwavering.
Charles was a 1957 graduate of Western Union High School in Waxhaw, NC. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Rochester University. His professional journey reflected his deep commitment to care and advocacy. He was employed by Wards Island Psychiatric Center as a Secure Care Treatment Aide, where he also served as Union Representative and Vice President of his chapter, tirelessly advocating for the rights and well-being of others.
He extended this passion to his neighborhood as well, serving as a tenant delegate with the Manhattanville Housing Authority, where he championed efforts to improve living conditions and support his fellow residents.
Charles had a zest for life and a heart full of joy. He loved browsing local flea markets for unique knick-knacks, and his deep passion for music was evident in his extensive collection of Doo Wop and R&B records. He enjoyed dancing, attending social clubs, and was known for engaging in spirited debates, always eager to share his perspective and spark thoughtful conversation.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Stephanie Perry Grayson of Columbia, SC; his son, Charles Perry of Monroe, GA: two sisters, Pastor Priscilla Bloodsworth of New Castle, DE and Mary Bryson of Dover, DE: two brothers, Lewis Bryson of Philadelphia, PA and Ricky Bryson of Wilmington, DE; four grandchildren, Ayana Gilmore (Joshua) of Columbia, SC, Ashyante Anais Jackson of Columbia, SC, Niyah Ashanti Perry of Statham, GA, and Charles X Perry of Savannah, GA; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also remembered lovingly by his best friends, Dresdan Lane and Mr. Hudson, along with a host of neces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ida Ruth Gordon and Charlotte Ann Wright; and two brothers. William C. Perry and Norris E. Currence.
His legacy of faith, love, humor, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
