Eugene Rutledge Obituary

Eugene Rutledge

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.

II Timothy 4:6-8

Eugene Rutledge, humbly bowed to God’s will and peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at MUSC Health in Lancaster, South Carolina.  A son of the late Herbie J. Rutledge and the late Mittie Drakeford Rutledge was born February 25, 1935 in Heath Springs, South Carolina.

Eugene  accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.  There he accepted the servitude and responsibilities as a dedicated church member and enjoyed his church and church family.

Eugene was educated in the Lancaster County School District and attended Hillside High School in Heath Springs, SC.   He was employed with several companies as a long distant truck driver and retired after many years of dedicated service.

Eugene embraced life and moved back to South Carolina in 2017 after having lived in New Jersey for over sixty years.  Eugene’s delight and fascination was that of a truck and his passion was the design of the 18 wheeler of which he was the professional.  He was the Rutledge family Patriarch; he never missed a family reunion he would travel far and near no matter where it was being held.  His delight was to pass his knowledge and wisdom to his nephews and cousins.  In his leisure time he enjoyed watching football and was an avid fan of the New York Jets.   To know him was to love him and he was loved and respected throughout the community.

Left to cherish loving memories are one brother, Herbie Rutledge Jr. (Melvenia) of Heath Springs, SC, six sisters, Carrie Carter and Cleo Everett both of Newark, NJ, Patricia Rutledge of Heath Springs, SC, Marian Nurse and Christine Chapman (William) all of Columbia, SC, Shelby Rutledge of Heath Springs, SC, a special lifelong friend and brother-in-law, Richard Drakeford of Heath Springs, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Drakeford, Rebecca Cunningham, three brothers, Sammie Rutledge, Ernest Rutledge, Hiawatha Robinson.
