Evelyn McIlwain Obituary

Evelyn “Judy” McIlwain, 62, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Born on June 3, 1963, she was the beloved daughter of the late David Lee Stradford and the late Mary Ellen Vernell Ella Ree Benson Stradford.

Affectionately known as “Judy” by all who loved her, she was a woman of deep faith and unwavering devotion to God and her community. She was a member of Bright Light Baptist Church and was reared at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as Choir Director. She also attended Salem AME Zion Church over the years, continuing her commitment to worship and fellowship.

Judy was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Eldred Leroy McIlwain. Their union was a testament to love, partnership, and dedication.

She received her education in the Lancaster County School District and was a proud 1981 graduate of Lancaster High School. Determined to further her education, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina Lancaster. Her passion for learning and nurturing young minds reflected her caring and compassionate nature.

Judy embraced life with a joyful and uplifting spirit. She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially playing softball and showcasing her remarkable talent for braiding hair. Her warm smile, encouraging words, and loving heart touched everyone she encountered.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband, Eldred McIlwain of Lancaster, SC; two loving daughters, Eldrina McIlwain and Markeonna Montgomery, both of Lancaster, SC; two brothers, Curtis Lee Stradford and Fredrick Crosby (Michelle), both of Lancaster, SC; two sisters, Carolyn Alston (Floyd) of Suffolk, VA, and Rachel Stradford of Lancaster, SC; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other close relatives and dear friends.

Though Judy has departed this earthly life, her legacy of faith, love, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
