Psalms 37:23 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way.”
On April 5, 2025, Frederick D. Smith (aka “Chuck” ,“Daddy Boo”, “Pete” and more recently “Poppy”)transitioned from the earthly realm after a courageous non-stop battle against several life-threatening illnesses. And through it all Chuck found the strength to muster his enchanting infectious smile. From an early age, he displayed a remarkable spirit of compassion and resilience. He was known for his warm smile and generous heart, being able to bring out the best in others, and touching the lives of everyone he encountered earning him the title “a peacemaker and a good man.” Chuck was also a committed and dedicated public servant whether through his military service, community involvement, or long tenured employment with the Maryland State Government’s Office of Budget, Personnel and Management and the Prince George’s County Government’s Office of Personnel.
Chuck received his Master of Administration from American University and Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of South Carolina. Chuck was proud of his South Carolina heritage, Lancaster/Heath Springs upbringing, and cherished his family and life-long friends. In March 1989 he met the love of his life, Tuwanda Smith. Chuck asked her to marry him during their first encounter, and shortly thereafter they became inseparable. They were married at Chuck’s insistence on February 14, 1992, and celebrated 33 years of marriage and Valentine Days this year. Together they raised their children and had a hand in raising a number of others. Chuck was adored by his in-laws especially the sisters-in-laws who were always at his side.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Gwendolyn and Charlie Smith; his mother-in-law, Geneva Gray; and two brother-in-laws: Vaughn Sheppard, and Tyrone Gray. He leaves to cherish his memory; a loving wife (Tuwanda); children: Angel Gerald (Alphonso), Shawn Waller (Brianna), Robin Penn, and Darius Smith; one aunt Gloria Adams (Henry): two sisters: Rosmarie Green (Jerry), and Tina Smith; brother: Napoleon Smith; sisters-in-law: Wendy Whittington, and Wanda Sheppard; brothers-in-law: Kevin Gray (Jackie), Argentina Gray, and Timothy Gray; God-children: Nikki Adams, and Rasheda Bryant; and grand-children, nieces, nephews cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Special acknowledgements go three of many cousins that helped to lift Chuck's spirits in his final days "Butchie Byrd", “Jimmy Kelly” and “Greg Johnson.” Special acknowledgements are also extended to Chuck's god-daughter (Nikki Adams) and his nephew-in-law (Christopher Henderson, who continues to provide unyielding support.
