George Nivens entered into eternal rest on April 18, 2026, in Lexington, South Carolina. He was born on November 14, 1944, to the late Manny Nivens and Annie McFarlan Nivens.
George was educated in the Lancaster County School system and was a man of deep faith and devotion. He was a faithful former member of the Church of Lancaster, where he served diligently as an Elder. Later, he united with Open Door Fellowship in Lancaster, South Carolina, where he continued his service with unwavering commitment until his health declined.
George found great joy in fellowship, especially through hosting cookouts alongside his beloved wife, Sherry. These gatherings brought together family and church members in love and unity. Even during his illness, his concern for his church family remained steadfast—so much so that he asked Sherry to prepare for an upcoming cookout, knowing he might not be able to attend. His generosity and thoughtfulness will long be remembered.
He was employed by Southern Gas Company and Steeles Heating and Air prior to his retirement, where he was known for his dedication and the care he showed his customers. Never one to sit idle, George later worked with the Lancaster Recycling Center, remaining a faithful employee until his health no longer permitted.
George leaves to cherish his loving memory: his devoted wife, Sherry Nivens of the home; one daughter, Melonie Hunter (Dwayne) of Lancaster, South Carolina; four grandsons, Quinton Thomas, Quinshea Hunter, Dawayne Hunter, Ty’Rea Hunter allof Lancaster, South Carolina; one great grand, Kennedy Barnes of Rock Hill, SC; five sisters, Mattie Craig of Lancaster, South Carolina, Vanessa Tillman of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Barbara Jean Thomas (David) of Collingswood, New Jersey, Delois Bennett of Penns Grove, New Jersey, and Joyce Bennett Parker of Smyrna, Delaware; two brothers, Jerry Nivens (Glendora) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mack Bennett (Melissa) of Sewell, New Jersey; one sister-in-law, Paulette Crockett of Lancaster, South Carolina; one son-in-law, James Massey of Lancaster, South Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved daughter, Lavern Hughes Massey; three sisters, Margaret Houston, Lillie Faulkner, and Helen New; and his stepfather, Reverend Otis Bennett.
George will be remembered for his kind heart, his willingness to help others, and the love he shared with family and friends. His legacy of faith, service, and compassion will live on in all who knew and loved him.
