James Thomas “Smokie” Truesdale, 75, of Lancaster, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 4, 2025. He was born on May 7, 1950, in Lancaster, SC, to the late Fred Lee McIlwain and the late Mae Ella Truesdale.
“Smokie,” as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Lancaster County School District and developed a passion for cooking, becoming known as a talented chef. Outside the kitchen, he enjoyed fishing, dancing, and cheering on his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Above all, Smokie loved his family and friends deeply and made sure they always felt that love.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley A. Truesdale of Lancaster, SC; one son, Corey D. Truesdale (Henrietta) of Waxhaw, NC; one daughter, Dejernette Beaty (Orji) of Virginia; four sisters, Deanne Clyburn and Darlene Stinson (Alfert), both of Lancaster, SC, Barbara Anthony (Billy) of Fayetteville, NC; Melody McMillian (Rick) of Raleigh, NC, one brother, Dexter McIlwain (Pamela) of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Ramon D. Rollins, Andrea R. Rollins, Braxton Beaty, Dyson Beaty, Caron Truesdale, and Ariana Truesdale; two great-grandchildren, Ayden Rollins and Hendrix Rollins; and a special friend, Michelle Stalk.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vicky McIlwain, Teresa Rushing, and Shirley Brown; and one brother, Ricky McIlwain.
Smokie will be remembered for his warm heart, joyful spirit, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
