Jane Hood Obituary

Our cherished matriarch, Mrs. Jane Gray Hood, departed this life peacefully at her home on October 15, 2025, at the age of 84. She was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, on January 22, 1941, to the late Charlie Mackey and Birda Jones Mackey.

Jane was educated in the Lancaster County School System and was a proud graduate of Barr Street High School. As a young woman, she developed a deep love for basketball—one that she would later pass down to her children and grandchildren.

She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Chalmers Hood, Jr., and their union was blessed with five children. Jane worked many years in the textile industry and retired from Springs Industries. After retirement, she became an entrepreneur and co-owner of The Family Restaurant with her siblings and later, Big Hood’s Lounge, which she operated alongside her husband.

Jane was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother—a pillar of strength, faith, and love. She was a faithful member of Cedar Warner AME Zion Church, where her dedication and service touched many lives. Her legacy is woven into the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

She was known for her warm hospitality and boundless generosity. Her home was a sanctuary—her table always full, and her arms always open. Whether offering sage advice, a home-cooked meal, or a friendly game of poker, Jane gave of herself freely and fully.

She leaves to cherish her memory three beloved sons: Kenneth B. Hood (Virginia) of Lancaster, SC; Tonie Hood (Carla Yvette) of Charlotte, NC; and Chalmers Hood III of Lancaster, SC. She also leaves ten cherished grandchildren: Larry Jackson, Kenjii Hood, Shaunki Hood, Tony Jackson (Becci), Tonisha Steward, Kenneth Hood Jr., Ramon Rudisell, Shakree Wright (Eric), Markevis Rudisell, and Chalmers Hood IV (Alexis); a dear sister, Gloria Gordon; and a loving sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Twitty.

She is further survived by 44 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and two devoted family members and caretakers, Regina “TT” Mackey and Phillip Mackey, along with a host of extended family and friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.

Jane was preceded in death by her loving parents, Charlie and Birda Mackey; her devoted husband, Chalmers Hood, Jr.; her daughter and son, Jacqueline Jackson and Charles Hood; and her dear siblings, Charlie Mackey, Jr. and Birda Mackey Gaddy.

Jane was the heart and soul of her family—a guiding light whose wisdom, strength, and unconditional love shaped generations. Her love endures in every story told, every recipe shared, and every life she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
