Lathen Porter Obituary

Mr. Lathen (Butch) Porter was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and loyal friend. He was born October 29, 1941, in Lancaster County.  He entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at MUSC in Lancaster, SC. He was the son of the late Joe Lee Porter and Pearlie Lowery Porter.

Lathen accepted Christ at an early age and was an exceptionally dedicated and devoted member and trustee of New Hope AME Zion church. He served faithfully until his decline in health.

He was educated in the Lancaster

County School District.

He was employed with Springs Cotton Mill, lead mechanic at Catawba Tire for numerous years and later went into business as a mechanic at P&J Tire.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Willie Ray Porter, Leroy Porter, & Joe Louis Porter; one sister: Myrtle Meyers.

Left to carry out his legacy and fond memories are three daughters, one son, and a very special grandson who was raised as his son: Melissa Porter of Lancaster, South Carolina, Rhonda R. Spears (Harold) of Pageland, South Carolina, Euthemia McMahon (Patrick) of Papillion, Nebraska, Reshay Porter of Lancaster, South Carolina, Lathen Addon Porter of Lancaster, South Carolina; 6 grandchildren; Tawana Williams, Terry Spears, Zyon McMahon, Cameryn McMahon, Jada Porter; four great grandchildren; Augustus Singletary, Aidan Williams, Caleb Porter, Archer Porter; three sisters; Frances Porter of Cleveland, Ohio, Peggy Wade-Martin of Millville, New Jersey, and Rebecca Johnson of New Carrollton.  Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Our loving father was an awesome cook who enjoyed working on cars including model cars, preparing his children for church, and serving others in the neighborhood. He was known as the neighborhood dad. All the cousins and family called him “Diddy Butch” not daddy, but “Diddy”.

Elaine Jackson McCain was his special adopted daughter.

He had two special young cousins he faithfully took to the Friday night football games: Talay Roger’s and Sherretha Jeter. His special “Best Friends” included Daisy Trapps, Cleatus and Luella Jones and L.J. Parker who were always faithful.

Our sister, Melissa(Lisa), was his caregiver. Our dad called her his doctor.  A special thanks goes out to our mother for always having a special relationship with Lisa to support her during this time.

We would like to thank the staff at MUSC Lancaster, Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and White Oak Manor in Lancaster, South Carolina for the exemplary care that was given to our father during his time of stay.
