Leon Thompson Obituary

On June 20, 2026, at Lancaster Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, South Carolina, Leon Thompson humbly bowed to God's will and peacefully entered into eternal rest. Born on March 15, 1951, in Lancaster County, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Finley Thompson Sr. and Irene McGriff Thompson Foster.

In his youth, Leon attended Greater Frazier AME Zion Church. He was educated in the Lancaster County School District and graduated from Barr Street High School, where he was a member of the school band and also served as a school bus driver. Throughout his life, Leon mastered several trades and was known for his strong work ethic. He was employed by Duke Energy, where he operated heavy equipment, worked as a butcher for Lancaster Freezer Locker, and later as a plumber for Jerry's Plumbing Company.

Leon was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He had a special passion for automobiles and loved driving, repairing, and enhancing cars. His mechanical skills and willingness to help others made him a trusted friend to many. Leon's warm smile, generous heart, and kind spirit touched countless lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Leon Donnell (Keri) Thompson of Monroe, North Carolina; his daughters, Shawn (John) Waters of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Tomika (Alan) Madison of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Yashimi Shinea Thompson of Newport News, Virginia, and Brittany Dye of Washington, D.C.; his brother, E. Ray (Sandy) Thompson of Lancaster, South Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his beloved cousin, Zan "Bear" McGriff, who was more like a brother; his dear family friend, Woody McMurray; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his son, Marko Thompson, and his brothers, Finley Thompson Jr., Michael Thompson, and Charles Thompson.

The family extends sincere appreciation to the staff of Lancaster Health and Rehabilitation Center, especially Nurse Donna Thomas, and to Agape Hospice of South Carolina, particularly Pat, Spencer, and Vivian, for the compassionate care and support they provided during Leon's final days. Leon's legacy of kindness, hard work, and service to others will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
