Mary Blackmon Obituary

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Isaiah 26:3

These were the principles that Mary Elizabeth Mackey Blackmon strived to follow in her life each and every day.

Mrs. Blackmon was a lifelong member of First Washington Baptist Church. She was awarded the gift of singing so at the age of eleven she joined the Junior Choir at First Washington and continued to sing in the choir until her health failed.

Singing was her passion. Although she loved to sing, she would be the first to say, "These nowadays songs don't do much for me, but give me a hymn and I'll have church." A few of her favorite hymns were "l Surrender All", "It Is Well with My Soul", and "Blessed Assurance". She also enjoyed leading songs in the choir. Some of her favorites were "God Specializes", "Halleluia "Tis Done", "That Other Shore", "Alright", "O How I Love Jesus" and "Mighty Wind". In addition to singing in the First Washington choir, Mrs. Blackmon also joined and sang in the Lancaster Chamber Choir. This choir provided high quality sacred and classical music to the community and consisted of persons from various denominations.

Mrs. Blackmon also had the heart of giving and helping. She enjoyed spreading love with cards, phone calls or just lending a helping hand. "What can I do for you?" or "What do you need?" made up a large portion of her vocabulary. She often said that her mother taught her to be kind and to help others. "If you help others, someone will help you", she said. So, as a very young child she and her mother cared for the sick, fed the hungry and helped the needy throughout the neighborhood. These attributes were instilled in her throughout her life as she exhibited the pioneer spirit of service and love.

Mrs. Blackmon is survived by her three children, Linda. B. Little, Betty B. Brace and Obie (Beverly) Blackmon, Jr., her grandchildren, Richard Kenneth Little, Lindsay (Rashad) Wright, Jalen Kobe Blackmon and Aalela Sanaa Blackmon, her great-grandchildren, Kenneth Jocobie Little, Grace Elizabeth Wright and Jaxon Rashad Wright, and her loving brother, Kelly Mackey, Jr.(Laverne). Mrs. Blackmon was the eldest child and only daughter of the late Kelly and Lelar B. Mackey, the widow of Deacon Obie Blackmon, Sr. and the older sister of her adorable brothers, the late John D. Mackey, Bobby Joe Mackey and Leonard George Mackey.

*If I can help somebody as I travel along. If I can help somebody with a word or song, my living will not be in vain."
