Ramona Pate Obituary

With profound love and heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of Ramona Barnes Pate, who departed this life on June 19, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on April 15, 1951, in Lancaster, South Carolina, Ramona lived a life filled with purpose, joy, and an unwavering dedication to her family, students, church, and community.

Ramona was the devoted wife of the late Levy Pate, and the cherished daughter of the late Ernest Wellington and Helen Hodges Barnes. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Wellington Barnes Jr.; her paternal grandparents, Theodore Roosevelt Barnes (Bud) and Emma McMullen Barnes; and her maternal grandparents, Roscoe Lee Hodges and Rhoena McDougald Hodges.

She is survived by her loving stepson Eric Duncan (Mira), her aunt Alvilda E. Barnes of Lancaster, SC, and her siblings: Gloria Phillips of Bridgeport, CT, Veronica Shannon (Mack), Theodore Barnes (Terry) of Rock Hill, SC, Connell Barnes, and TherithiaYoumans, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, former students, and lifelong friends.

A gifted educator and passionate mentor, Ramona dedicated her life to teaching and empowering others. She served as an instructor and professor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Livingstone College, taught at the Discovery School, and was a familiar, welcoming presence as a substitute teacher throughout Lancaster County. She had a deep commitment for the concept of life long learning. Her classroom was not just a space for academic learning, but one of joy, encouragement, and growth.

Beyond education, Ramona had a deep love for the arts—especially acting and reading—and brought that same creativity and light into every space she entered. She was a pillar of her church community, known for organizing impactful events such as summer camps, women’s day programs, and Black History Month celebrations. Her faith and commitment to service touched countless lives.

To know Ramona was to know laughter, warmth, and radiant positivity. She was often described as “the sunshine in everybody’s day”—a woman whose smile could brighten a room and whose presence made people feel seen, loved, and lifted. Her legacy is one of joy, education, and unwavering kindness.
