Richard Lee Witherspoon Jr.
Richard Lee Witherspoon Jr., 64, peacefully passed away on June 16, 2025. Born on February 2, 1961, in Chester, South Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Hattie Mae Caldwell and the late Richard Lee Witherspoon Sr.
Richard's journey was one of purpose, learning, and service. He was educated in the Chester County School District and continued his pursuit of knowledge by earning a Master's Degree in Psychology from Florida State University. His passion for helping others led him to a fulfilling career as a counselor for Vocational Rehabilitation, where he made a difference in the lives of many.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong love for learning and discipline. Richard attended Pine Grove Baptist Church in Great Falls, SC, where he found spiritual fellowship and community.
Richard found joy in the simple pleasures of life-fishing on quiet days, analyzing the games of his favorite teams the Chicago Bulls and Carolina Panthers-writing, and deep critical thinking. His laughter and wisdom were gifts to his family and friends. He was happiest when spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored beyond measure.
Richard's legacy of love and learning lives on through his devoted wife, Leslie Witherspoon; his children, Anastasia Crowder (Damell), Rudy Shannon, Johndra Roddey, all of Lancaster, SC, and his son, Omarion Perry of Great Falls, SC, He leaves behind seven precious grandchildren: Eddie Small Jr., Nevach Small, Harmony Bufford, Mya Allen, SorRaya Shannon, King Dye, and Ayad Crowder, one aunt, Viola Sanders of Great Falls, SC, his dog, Mayweather and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends..
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Graham and Mary Sue Barber, and three brothers, Albert Witherspoon, Joe Lewis Caldwell, and Michael Caldwell.
Richard's warm spirit, love of family, and thirst for knowledge will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
May his soul rest in peace and his memory be a blessing.
