Tanya McCree Obituary

With a spirit as radiant as her smile and a presence that could fill any room, Tanya Monique Gordon McCree took her final bow, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and undeniable grace.

Tanya was born on November 26, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Elizabeth Gordon Reid and Mr. Willie Green. She was lovingly reared by her devoted father, Johnny Reid, whose guidance helped shape the bold, resilient woman she would become. At a young age, Tanya relocated to Varnville, South Carolina a place that would become the foundation of her journey and the community she would grow to impact deeply.

From early on, Tanya carried herself with a quiet confidence and a spark that could not be dimmed. She was educated in the Hampton County School District One, where her passion for learning began to blossom. That passion led her to Winthrop University, where she earned her degree in Elementary and Special Education along with two Master degrees in Education and Administration a calling that perfectly matched her nurturing spirit and vibrant personality.

Tanya began her teaching career in York County School District, where she was dedicated to shaping young minds. She later moved to the Lowcountry and taught for 3 years in Hampton County School District Two.  Her journey then led her back to the Piedmont area, where she continued her work in education until her passing at Lancaster High School. She was more than a teacher she was a light, a motivator, and a safe space for so many children who needed not just instruction, but love.

Proverbs 31:25

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

To know Tanya was to experience her essence bold yet tender, stylish yet grounded, strong yet deeply compassionate. She carried herself like a true diva: not for attention, but because she understood her worth. Whether through her words, her presence, or her unwavering support, Tanya had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Though she wore her strength beautifully, Tanya also faced life’s challenges with courage and grace. She never allowed hardship to define her instead, she rose through it, carrying others along the way with her unwavering love and resilience.

She was also blessed with the cherished title of godmother, a role she embraced with deep love, pride, and responsibility. To her three beloved godchildren Cherish Sergeant, Elijah Lawson, and Nia Hill she was a guiding light, a protector, and a constant source of encouragement. She poured into them with the same warmth and wisdom she gave so freely to all, leaving an imprint on their lives that will never fade.
