Vernon Champion Obituary

Vernon Champion bowed to God’s will and peacefully and quietly entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at his home. He was born June 13, 1951, in Kershaw, South Carolina, and was the baby boy of the late Colie and Emma Dixon Champion.

Vernon grew up in Lancaster County and was a proud graduate of Hillside High School, Class of 1969. He received his salvation at a young age and consistently reflected his faith through his warm smile, contagious laughter, and loving spirit. As a faithful member of First Kershaw Baptist Church, he served diligently on the Trustees Board and as a member of the choir.

Vernon was a dedicated employee throughout his life, having worked with Springs Industries and Conbarco Industries, and was currently employed with Bob Williams Cleaners. In his leisure time, Vernon found great joy in fishing, selling fresh produce, and visiting with family and friends—simple pleasures that reflected his love for people and the outdoors.

On March 14, 1969, Vernon was united in holy matrimony to Helen Truesdale Champion, and from this union two children were born. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Vernon was a beloved man whose character truly never met a stranger. He was known and loved by all who crossed his path. Always busy helping others or staying active, he was deeply devoted to his family and lived a life marked by service, faith, and kindness.

He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories: two sons, Corey Eugene Champion, Sr. (Christyl) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Quincy McDaniel of Savannah, Georgia; five grandchildren, Tatyana Danielle Champion Bullard (Jared) of Houston, Texas, Kyndall Joi’ Champion, Corey Eugene Champion, Jr. of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Taywyn Pearson-Champion and Lavron Pearson-Champion of Brisbane, Australia; six sisters-in-law, Geralene Patterson, Kay Daniels (Barry), Burnette Truesdale, Patricia Fisher (Mike), Teresa Sanders (Donnie), and Janice Davis (Frank); one brother-in-law, Larry Truesdale (Leila); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his sisters, Eleanoria Champion, Willienevia Champion, Gilbertine Champion, and Barbara Champion; and his brothers, Edward Champion, Calvin Champion, Leroy Champion, and Melvin Champion.
