Walter J. Massey Sr. peacefully passed away on January 2, 2026. He was born on January 26, 1945, in Lancaster, South Carolina, to the late Ike Massey and the late Alberta S. Massey.
Walter was raised in a strong Christian environment and accepted Christ at an early age. He was a faithful member of Bright Light Baptist Church in Heath Springs, South Carolina, where he proudly served on the usher board and supported the church with dedication.
He was united in holy matrimony to Teresa Mickles Massey, and their marriage was one of love, commitment, and devotion for many blessed years.
Walter was educated in the Lancaster County School District and was a proud graduate of Hillside High School, Class of 1963. Following graduation, he honorably enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with courage and distinction, earning a Purple Heart for his bravery. After completing his military service, Walter began his career at Springs Industries, where he worked faithfully until his retirement.
Walter found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved shopping at Walmart, working diligently in his flower garden, and, most of all, spoiling his beloved grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving wife, Teresa Mickles Massey of the home; four sons, Jonathan Massey Sr. of Lancaster, SC, Walter Massey Jr. of Lancaster, SC, Phillip Mickles of Orangeburg, SC, and Clifton Mickles of Lancaster, SC; one daughter, Melissa Massey of Lancaster, SC; fifteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a devoted caregiver, Helzar “Skinny” Baxter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and dear friends.
Walter J. Massey Sr. will be remembered for his faith, service, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
