Lula Wilma Ellerby Bracey daughter of late Willie Gilcrease and Lula
Ellerby, was born February 18, 1930, in Bethune, South Carolina. She
answered God’s call in the early morning of January 3, 2022.
Wilma, affectionately known as “Biddy” by her siblings, was educated in
the Public School System of Kershaw County. She was married to the
late Samuel Bracey and to this union seven children were born.
She lived her entire life in Bethune, South Carolina and was a
cornerstone in the community. She was a faithful member of Mill Creek
Baptist Church and held many leadership positions to include choir
director, President of the Missionary board, and advisor to the pastor.
Most recently she was identified as the Church Mother and was an
active participant in providing direction for the growth of Mill Creek
Baptist Church.
In the mid-seventies she was inducted into the Daughters of Isis, where
she was an active member for many years. She was an avid reader of
the Holy Word and often sought opportunities to share and encourage
others in Christian discipleship. She enjoyed the sport of baseball, and
especially watching her favorite team, the Atlanta braves.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Marie Caldwell, Odell Jackson,
and Ezell Ellerby, also her son John N. Bracey and grandson Cedric D.
Hammonds.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories and continue her legacy of
love her children; Willie (Jean) Bracey of Jefferson, South Carolina,
Sammy (Linda) Bracey of Lancaster, South Carolina, Barbara (Jack)
Hammonds of Bethune, South Carolina, Herbert (Minnie) Bracey of
Bishopville, South Carolina, Leslie (Terri) Bracey of Columbia, South
Carolina and Wayne (Toni) Bracey Columbia, South Carolina, her
Thirteen grands, Fifteen great grands, two great-great grands and a
plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
